‘You are not at war!’ – Dalglish reveals Fergie title message

Sir Alex Ferguson sent a letter of congratulations to Liverpool after they won their first Premier League title.

Liverpool were crowned champions of England for the first time since 1990 on Thursday when Chelsea beat Manchester City.

Kenny Dalglish was the last man to guide the Reds to a league championship and would later compete for the title with Ferguson at Blackburn.

But the two old rivals share a mutual respect and Ferguson was “magnanimous” enough to congratulate a club he once swore to knock right off their f**king perch.

“He contacted us to say congratulations by the modern medium – you are not at war!” Dalglish joked.

“You go through the older generation – Fergie at Manchester United, Brian Kidd, Mike Summerbee; all the old foes who went through football at the same time as us – and at the end of the year you sent a letter of congratulations to say well done. That continues through.

“It is a great compliment. You are in competition and rivals but you are magnanimous enough to send a letter saying congratulations. Everyone is in the same game, aren’t they?

“The people who you’ve been competing with all your life in football, they would wish it was themselves who won, it but they are proud to pay homage to other people as well.”

Current Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said that it “hurt” to see the Reds crowned, while pledging to make sure it would not be “say, 26 years or more until the next time we win it”.

Jurgen Klopp guided Liverpool to the title over five years and seven key Premier League games, including a couple of chastening defeats.
