When Kim Jong-un’s right-hand man, General Kim Yong-chol, arrived in New York on Wednesday, he was the most senior North Korean to visit the US since 2000.

The former spy chief turned top nuclear negotiator is considered to be one of the most influential North Korean officials outside of the Kim family dynasty – but he is also highly controversial.
Officially the vice-chairman of the central committee of North Korea’s all-powerful Workers’ Party, the general is known to be a key military strategist for the regime and has been spotted at Kim Jong-un’s side at his landmark meetings this year.
