Humberto Carrillo won a 20-man battle royal this afternoon during the pre-show to WWE Crown Jewel, earning an opportunity to challenge A.J. Styles for the United States Championship later this evening on the main card of the show.
The high-flying Superstar won by last eliminating both Erick Rowan and Luke Harper, after a brawl broke out over the WWE 24/7 Championship and distracted everyone. The match included stars from both Raw and Smackdown, as Crown Jewel seems to be immune from the brand split, which was supposed to go into effect after the WWE Draft.
Carrillo has had a rapid rise through the WWE ranks since signing with the company almost exactly one year ago. After showing up on 205 Live back in January as a surprise challenger to then-champion Buddy Murphy, he also competed in the Royal Rumble weekend “When Worlds Collide” events, and later worked his way into a Cruiserweight title match at the Clash of Champions pay-per-view.
Since being drafted to the Raw brand earlier this month, he debuted on the red brand two weeks ago with a high-profile loss to Universal Champion Seth Rollins, as a way to immediately introduce him to the USA Network fans in a major way. Last week he faced AJ Styles in a non-title match, but was unsuccessful yet again.
