In case you missed it, this Monday’s post-Elimination Chamber edition of WWE RAW featured several surprise call-ups from the NXT brand, including the high-flying sensation Ricochet, who teamed up with Intercontinental Champion Finn Balor in a match against Bobby Lashley and Lio Rush.
According to Dave Meltzer via Wrestling Observer Radio, the original plan was for Finn Balor to face Ricochet in a big singles match on the show. To be clear, the plan was not for the two to engage in any kind of longer-term rivalry, but simply to have a blow-away match on RAW to introduce Ricochet to the WWE fans who only watch the main roster product.
Apparently it was Triple H himself who went and had the match nixed. There are some obvious booking issues, in that Balor couldn’t have lost because he had just won the Intercontinental Championship the night before, and Ricochet couldn’t have lost because it was his big debut. The decision was eventually made to throw the two together in a tag team match, which also explains why Lashley and Rush, who split up the night before, were rushed back together.
