Tottenham sign Doherty from Wolves for an undisclosed fee

Tottenham have completed the signing of Wolves defender Matt Doherty for an undisclosed fee.

The 28-year-old has signed a four-year deal with the club ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.

Although the fee hasn’t been made public, it’s believed to be in the region of £15 million.

Spurs and Wolves agreed a deal for the player earlier this week.

Speaking about the move, Doherty said: “I’m very proud to be joining such a big club. [They have] the best stadium in the world and possibly the best training ground in the world.

“Once I knew there was interest, it was a no-brainer for me.

“My time at Wolves was fantastic – I haven’t got a bad word to say about the whole club at all. I just feel like coming here is going to take my game and my career to the next level.”

The Republic of Ireland international will bolster Jose Mourinho’s defensive options as the club aims for Champions League football.

Doherty is a direct replacement for departed right back Kieran Trippier, who left London to join Atletico Madrid last year.

Spurs initially signed Serge Aurier to replace him, although he was less than convincing during the most recent campaign.

Doherty had a successful time at Wolves after joining in 2010. He helped the club to gain promotion to the Premier League in the 2017/18 season, when they won the Championship after reaching 99 points.

He then became one of the club’s most reliable performers as they reached consecutive top ten finishes. Wolves also played in the Europa League last season. They reached the quarter finals before getting knocked out by eventual winners Sevilla.

Doherty is Mourinho’s fourth signing of this transfer window. They’ve already brought in Southampton captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg for £20 million and Joe Hart on a free transfer.

Giovani Lo Celso signed on a permanent deal from Real Betis after impressing during his loan spell.
