Tapsoba among ten Arsenal transfer targets named

Arsenal are said to be ‘seriously interested’ in Bayer Leverkusen’s 22-year-old Burkino Faso centre-half Edmond Tapsoba, but his price could be prohibitive.

The Athletic have put together a detailed assessment of Arsenal transfer requirements this summer, with the club said to be ‘interested in goalkeepers, defenders across every position, plus central midfielders and No 10s’.

The priority seems to be for the latter, with a permanent deal (or second loan) for Martin Odegaard a priority, though that might have been complicated by Zinedine Zidane leaving Real Madrid. Emi Buendia is also a potential target for that position.

Crystal Palace’s Tyrick Mitchell and Hibernian’s Josh Doig are mentioned as possible left-back options, while Arsenal are also reportedly chasing a right-back as Hector Bellerin and Ainsley Maitland-Niles are set to leave this summer.

In central midfield, Brighton’s Yves Bissouma and Sheffield United’s Sander Berge are said to be targets to replace the outgoing Granit Xhaka, while Dani Ceballos has gone back to Spain after his loan spell.

There is also said to be a pursuit incoming for a goalkeeper, with both Championship play-off final goalkeepers David Raya and Freddie Woodman said to be targets.

There is no mention of any pursuit for wingers despite the gossip on Saturday morning claiming that Arsenal are interested in both Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez from Manchester City, who have scored 14 goals each this season.

Centre-half is an intriguing position, with a great deal dependent on the form and attitude of William Saliba when he returns from a loan spell at Nice. In the meantime, Arsenal are interested in Sevilla’s Jules Kounde but they face the twin problems of a £50m price tag and Kounde being unlikely to choose a club that cannot offer European football.

Bayer Leverkusen’s 22-year-old centre-half Tapsoba has emerged as an alternative, though it seems that Arsenal would not get much change out of £50m for a player who joined the German club in January 2020 for £16.2m.

Arsenal are said to be ‘seriously interested’ in Tapsoba but they might save themselves that outlay of Saliba returns from France a better defender and impresses Mikel Arteta.
