St. Cloud State’s Brett Velasquez earns Academic All-America honors

St. Cloud State University sophomore wrestler Brett Velasquez (Bennington, Neb./Bennington H.S.) has been named to the 2017 Academic All-America® Division II Men’s At-Large Second Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Velasquez was nominated for the award by St. Cloud State Interim Director of Athletic Media Relations Tom Nelson.
The at-large program for the CoSIDA Academic All-America® program includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo for both men and women; bowling, crew and field hockey for women; and volleyball and wrestling for men. Athletes are eligible for the award if they have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average and are at least a sophomore or above.
A two-time All-American, Velasquez won the NCAA DII championship at 125-pounds in 2016 and placed third at 125-pounds in 2017 for the Huskies. Velasquez completed the 2016-17 season with a 25-3 record and won first place honors in the 125-pound bracket at the 2016 Husky Open and the 2017 NCAA Division II Super 3 Region tournament.

Velasquez was a driving forced behind the Huskies’ second place finish at the 2017 NCAA Division II championships. He also helped SCSU gain a first place finish at the NCAA DII Super 3 Region tournament and the 2017 NWCA DII National Duals.
Velasquez is a biomedical sciences major at St. Cloud State University. This marks the first time that Velasquez has earned Academic All-American honors for the Huskies. The CoSIDA Academic All-America award is widely recognized as the nation’s top collegiate athletic award and Velasquez is just the fifth SCSU wrestler to receive this elite honor.
