St. Cloud State goes 3-0 at Ranger Duals

Huskies open Ranger Duals with win over McKendree

#2 St. Cloud State University wrestling scored a 28-14 victory over the McKendree University Bearcats in the opening round of the Ranger Duals in Kenosha, Wisc. on Jan. 16.

The Huskies opened up with a forfeit win at 125lbs where Brett Valesquez was called upon to pick up the open points. However, despite giving up the open at 125lbs, McKendree fired back with three consecutive wins at 133lbs Naquan Hardy over Jarred Oftedahl, 141lbs Darren Wynn over Travis Swanson, and 149lbs Mech Spraggins over Noah Cuzzetto.

Down but not out, the Huskies recovered and won the next two consecutive matches with Travis Holt and #1mClint Poster picking up the wins at 157lbs and 165lbs respectively.

McKendree would pick up their final win at 174lbs with John Filipek over Clayton Jennissen in a close 5-4 decision. St Cloud State would finish strong though; picking up wins in the three final weights with Uthman Rabiu winning by major decision 11-0 at 184lbs, Trae Story with the technical fall 18-0 at 197lbs and Austin Goergen receiving the forfeit at the Heavyweight decision.

SCSU charts victory over Indianapolis

#2 St. Cloud State wrestling (7-1, 0-0 NSIC) scored a 34-8 victory over the #16 Indianapolis squad in the second dual match at the Ranger Duals in Kenosha, Wisc. on Saturday, Jan. 16.

St. Cloud State opened up the dual with wins both at 125lbs and 133lbs, as Brett Velasquez(125) and Tyler Pasvogel(133) gave the Huskies a early 7-0 team score lead over Indianapolis.

After dropping the match at 141, Nick Crume over Ryan Rodorigo, St Cloud State would win the next three matches in dominant fashion; scoring two falls thanks to Jay Hildreth and Larry Bomstad at 149 and 157, as well as a major decision with Josh Berg at 165.

Jordan Collins of Indianapolis would squeak a win over St. Cloud State’s Vince Dietz at 174. However, the Huskies would remain perfect the rest of the dual earning wins at 184 with Chevy Farris, 197 with Trae Story and at Heavyweight as Mike Hobs would pick up the major over Brian Snyder with a score 10-0.

The Huskies will continue their weekend campaign against the host school Wisconsin-Parkside who received a #6 ranking in the last NCAA Division 2 national poll.

Huskies win battle against nationally ranked UW-Parkside

The #2 ranked St. Cloud State University wrestling team (8-1, 0-0 NSIC) won a battle over the #6 ranked Wisconsin-Parkside squad 25-15 to remain an unbeaten 3-0 on the weekend in Kenosha, WI at the Ranger Duals on Saturday, Jan. 16.

Brett Velasquez started the dual off with receiving a forfeit at 125lbs giving the Huskies an early 6-0 edge. However, St Cloud State would drop the next two weights by close decision at both 133lbs and 141lbs.

#6 ranked Jay Hildreth would then spark a three consecutive win streak starting at 149lbs with Larry Bomstad picking up the decision at 157lbs and #1 Clint Poster with the fall at 165lbs. Wisconsin-Parkside would then pick up 3 consecutives victories by close decisions at 174lbs, 184lbs and 197lbs; in attempts to steal the dual away.

However #1 ranked Austin Goergen would end their run quickly, with a pin in the first period to seal the dual for the Huskies and earning the squad a perfect 3-0 dual record on the weekend.

The #2 ranked Huskies will continue their 2015-16 campaign next Friday and Saturday competing away against both NSIC conference members Minnesota State University Moorhead and Northern State University.
