Spurs and Man City eyeing transfer for former Boro midfielder

Premier League clubs Tottenham and Man City are monitoring the progress of Atalanta midfielder Marten de Roon, according to a report.

The Dutchman played for Middlesbrough during the 2016/17 campaign before re-signing for the Italian outfit.

He is now an important part of their exciting team, with his form catching the eye of multiple top clubs.

According to 90Min, Spurs and Man City could make bids for the player in 2021.

Man City were linked with him last season as a replacement for Ilkay Gundogan. The report states that Gundogan’s decision to remain in Manchester prevented a transfer from happening.

Pep Guardiola is thought to be a keen admirer of de Roon, who is now an elite midfielder after progressing with Atalanta.

If Gundogan does decide to leave in the future, it’s thought that the 29-year-old is their number one target to replace him.

Spurs, meanwhile, have began monitoring de Roon more recently. Harry Winks is being linked with an exit if his first team options don’t improve, so de Roon could be signed as his replacement in North London.

Spurs boss Jose Mourinho is also a fan of the midfielder. After his Man Utd side played Middlesbrough in the Premier League, he told reporters: “This kid De Roon is phenomenal, his work-rate is phenomenal.”

One sticking point for the two English clubs is the price. Atalanta don’t want him to leave Italy for a second time, which means they will likely want a high transfer fee.

Spurs have recently spent £15 million on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and £53 million on Tanguy Ndombele to bolster their midfield.

That means chairman Daniel Levy is unlikely to sanction a major bid for de Roon.

City could use funds from a Gundogan transfer to sign de Roon if becomes available next year.
