Solskjaer: Henderson ‘ready’ to step in for ‘human being’ De Gea

Dean Henderson is “ready” to cover for Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gives him “the time he needs” to be with his newborn child.

The England international started on Wednesday night as the Red Devils were held to a goalless draw against Crystal Palace, with Lee Grant filling in on the substitutes bench.

Henderson has been limited to just three Premier League starts this campaign but with De Gea now absent following the birth of his first child, the 23-year-old will now get his chance to impress.

“I will give David the time he needs before he comes back,” said Solskjaer. “He wanted to go and be there, so there was not even a decision to make.

“Dean is ready, so we can give him the time he needs. You have to remember there is a human being in there. I don’t know when he will be back but it won’t be long.”

Next up on Sunday is a clash with neighbours and Premier League leaders Manchester City and Solskjaer admits the Citizens are ahead of Man Utd “by a fair distance”.

“Our focus is on this game, not where we are going to end up,” said Solskjaer.

“We want to be the best possible Man Utd and try to improve on last season, get to a final and win a trophy. They are ahead of us by a fair distance.

“I can only control what is happening at Man Utd, there are so many differences between the clubs. They are the only team ahead of us at the moment. It’s a fantastic spell, with great form and 21 wins.”
