SmackDown LIVE Results (04/16): Superstar Shake-up Continues
Posted On July 3, 2020
The 2019 WWE Superstar Shakeup edition of SmackDown LIVE opens up with a look back at last night’s RAW, which featured the beginning of The Superstar Shakeup. We are live from The Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada as Tom Phillips welcomes us to the show. He is joined by Corey Graves & Byron Saxton.
We go right to the ring and out comes Kevin Owens to a huge hometown pop. Greg Hamilton introduces him and the ring is set up for The Kevin Owens Show. He soaks in the atmosphere of his hometown crowd for a moment before beginning in French and welcoming them to The Kevin Owens Show. He continues in English, saying that everyone is buzzing from The Superstar Shake-Up and in fact later tonight Mr. McMahon himself is going to be here to reveal the biggest acquisition in the history of SmackDown.
Owens then says of course, the biggest Superstar is already here on SmackDown, because that’s him. But out of respect for his guest, he is going to move on and it is somebody that he really does respect a lot, your WWE Champion Kofi Kingston. Kofi Kingston makes his entrance flanked by his New Day Stablemate Xavier Woods. Owens welcomes them to the show and to Montreal and invites them to take a seat before beginning the interview.
Owens then says that it’s great to have Kofi here because what he did at WrestleMania is something we will never forget – his first WWE Championship Singles Match. He faced Daniel Bryan against great odds and beat him to become the champion and Owens wants to congratulate him in person. The crowd joins in a standing ovation and “You deserve it!” chants rain down.
Kingston then says that he appreciates the kind words and says that it is because of the audience that he is champion. Owens then says that somebody is missing and that’s Big E. He’s not here because he’s still stuck in the splits. Woods then explains that Big E was injured last week in their match and honestly with all The Superstar Shake-Up RAW took 80% of The Up Up Down Down crew and if he doesn’t get Tyler Breeze on SmackDown he is gonna lose his mind.
Kofi cuts him off and tells him everything’s going to be fine. Owens then says that New Day are scheduled to wrestle Rusev & Shinsuke Nakamura tonight and since they are used to being a trio and Kingston’s carrying precious cargo, they need some backup more than ever and he offers his services as Big K before realizing that Big O is funnier.
New Day then say that it’s a big commitment and there is a lot to it – wearing crop tops, testing cereal, throwing pancakes, video game tournaments, movement of the groinal region and so on. Owens then gives them a little hip swivel and some pelvic thrusts, which seems to impress Xavier & Kofi. Kingston then says that he is a champion of the people, so if Montreal’s into it, they will make Owens an honorary member of The New Day.
The crowd is in fact into it, so it’s settled. Kofi then presents Owens with a crop top New Day shirt and he puts it on over his t-shirt and tie. Owens kneels and they present him a unicorn horn, officially inducting him to The New Day as the honorary Big O.
Rusev & Shinsuke Nakamura are walking backstage when Cesaro rolls up to offer his services to counter Kevin Owens in their Six-Man Tag Team Match for later tonight.
Finn Balor makes his entrance as he has been drafted to SmackDown LIVE.
On that bombshell, we go to a commercial break.
Back from the commercial break and we find out that WWE Intercontinental Champion Finn Balor will be wrestling Mustafa Ali in a Non-Title Match.
WWE Intercontinental Champion Finn Balor vs. Ali: This one is a Non-Title Match. The opening bell sounds and they trade holds as the opening moments of this one are fairly evenly matched. Ali starts to get the upper hand and he knocks Balor outside and then kicks him off the apron. Ali follows up with a suicide dive on Balor, then he takes him back in the ring for a shoulder hold. Balor breaks free, but then he misses a shot in the corner and Ali kicks him down then hits the X-Factor. Balor finally counters something and fights back, then he hits a double foot stomp. Balor goes up top, but Ali trips him up and they fight on the turnbuckle. Ali hits a Frankensteiner off the top for a two count. Ali looks for a splash off the top but misses and Balor comes back with the Coup De Grace for the three count. Winner: WWE Intercontinental Champion Finn Balor
After the match, Balor stands tall with the title as we go to replays. Balor offers his hand while Ali is down in the corner. Ali gets up on his own but they shake hands in a show of respect. Balor continues celebrating as his music plays.
We head backstage where The New Day are carrying a tray of pancakes and are looking for Big O (Kevin Owens). They find him and he is admiring the unicorn horn they gave him. They have an initiation for him. Owens has to eat all the pancakes faster than Big E’s record. Owens then admits that he has never eaten a pancake in his life but he’s game, so they start the timer and he begins cramming pancakes down his gullet, all the while complaining about how dry they are. The camera fades to black as Owens continues eating.
R-Truth & Carmella make their entrance as Carmella will be wrestling Charlotte Flair after the commercial break.
Back from the commercial break and we get another video vignette starring Bray Wyatt’s shiny new hand puppet.
We go backstage and see that Kevin Owens has beaten Big E’s pancake record and is officially an honorary member of The New Day. Xavier Woods then gives him a little “One of us! One of us!” chant and we have a vomit scare but Owens keeps it together.
Carmella vs. Charlotte Flair: Charlotte starts off strong with several kicks on Carmella. The fight spills out to ringside and Carmella mounts a comeback and hits a splash off the fan barricade down onto Charlotte on the ringside floor. Back in the ring, Charlotte & Carmella trade strikes now. Charlotte starts working over Carmella’s left knee and they fight out to the ringside floor. Charlotte climbs up to the top of the barricade, but Carmella knocks Charlotte down and superkicks her on the floor. Back in the ring, Charlotte takes out Carmella’s knee again and then applies the Figure Eight for the win via submission. Winner: Charlotte Flair
After the match, Flair makes her exit as her music hits. Referee Charles Robinson holds the rope for her as she leaves the ring. We go to replays. R-Truth is checking on Carmella when the music of Lars Sullivan hits and out he comes. Lars hits the ring and Truth tries to fight him off but Lars levels him and just laughs at Truth’s attempt. Truth looks up from the mat and takes his jacket off. Truth charges but Lars catches him in mid-air and spikes him to the mat with The Freak Accident. Fans boo as Lars stands over Truth. Carmella looks terrified as Lars stalks her into the corner, staring her down. Fans chant “asshole!” at Lars as he laughs. Lars turns back to Truth and hits him with the running sit-down powerbomb. Lars yells out some more as fans boo him. Lars looks out at the crowd and then laughs at Truth again as officials hit the ring to check on him.
Commentary then promises us an appearance from RAW & SmackDown Women’s Champion Becky Lynch which will be up next right after the commercial break.
Back from the commercial break and we get some hype for The Shield’s Final Chapter on Sunday.
We then get a recap of WrestleMania’s main event.
Becky Lynch is in the ring with both of her titles and a microphone in her hand.
She begins by saying that she is gonna say it again because it says nice – she did what she said she was gonna do and that is beat Ronda Rousey at WrestleMania to become a double champion. A “Becky Two Belts!” chant goes up and she lets out a “That’s me!” phrase. Lynch then says that seeing her challengers parade around yesterday reminded her of what her job is.
Job one, run through Lacey Evans. Job two, break new ground and slap new heads right here, so whoever they bring in, she will batter every single one of those dopes.
Ember Moon makes her entrance. She says that she is out there to make a name for herself and.
Bayley makes her entrance. She too has joined SmackDown LIVE. Becky offers her a hug but she says that she thinks she got all her hugs out on RAW. Bayley then says that it’s been a while since she has been on the same roster with Lynch and this whole last year she willed The WWE Women’s Tag Team Titles into existence, but as special as those titles are to her, now that she’s here on SmackDown LIVE as a singles competitor, she’s got her eyes on two other titles.
WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions The IIconics make their entrance. Billie Kay says that she thinks she heard someone say “two belts” and Peyton Royce confirms. Kay then mocks Bayley & Ember for having zero belts and they mock Bayley one more time for not having The WWE Women’s Tag Team Titles anymore. Speaking of two belts, they have two titles and they are much better than Becky’s because theirs are iconic.
Paige makes her entrance next. She says that The IIconics look like they are having a great time wearing the titles but the audience will like it better if they defend them, so she is there to introduce the duo she is managing on SmackDown LIVE, two gifted women she has believed in from the beginning.
Fire & Desire interrupt, with microphones in hand and thank Paige before saying that they need no introduction. Sonya Deville then says that SmackDown has waited long enough for The Absolution reunion, to which Paige says that they will have to wait longer because she is here to represent two brand new, revolutionary women. The next tag team champions, in fact Asuka is first to be introduced and then Paige introduces her tag team partner, Kairi Sane.
And further, if you want to debut, you have to make an impact and she sends Asuka & Sane to attack. We got a brawl. Becky watches from the corner as the eight other women continue to fight aimlessly and the babyfaces stand tall to send us to a commercial break.
Back from the commercial break and we’ve got a match in progress.

The Hardy Boyz get a locker room promo where they talk about being the greatest tag team in all of space and time.

Kofi follows up with the Boom Drop, then he knocks Rusev off the apron again. Kofi hits he SOS on Cesaro for a two count. Cesaro fights back and swings Kofi, then applies the Sharpshooter. Owens breaks up the hold, then Nakamura takes out Owens. Woods takes out Nakamura, then Rusev takes out Woods. Rusev misses a shot on Kofi and Owens tags in. Owens throws Rusev out to ringside, then Owens helps launch Kofi for a suicide dive on Rusev & Nakamura at ringside. Back in the ring, Kofi hits the Trouble In Paradise on Rusev, then Owens hits the Stone Cold Stunner on Rusev for the three count. Winners: The New Day (WWE Champion Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods & “Big O” Kevin Owens)
After the match, Owens celebrates with The New Day as the music hits. We see WWE Chairman Vince McMahon backstage watching the celebration.
We are promised his big acquisition announcement right after the commercial break.
Back from the commercial break and we see the same video package from RAW of the children’s toys in front of a black background with smoke. We then see the puppet in the rocking chair and it laughs.
Mr. McMahon makes his entrance and gets on the mic. Vince says that it’s so nice to be back in Montreal. Vince then says that it’s rare he ever puts a seal of approval on any Superstar, but he is about to, because this Superstar is the future of the entire WWE. Vince then says that this Superstar is tough, talented and exudes charisma. Vince introduces Elias and Elias walks out with his guitar. Elias steps in the ring and shakes hands with Vince. Elias then cuts a brief promo complaining about some of Vince’s previous decisions, but after what Vince just said and did, he knows that Vince has his finger on the pulse of what the audience wants. Elias then says that there is no better way to kick off the new era of SmackDown LIVE than walking with Elias. Elias then trashes the Montreal fans and says that now AJ Styles is gone from SmackDown, SmackDown is The Temple Of Elias. Elias then tries to start his song, but then Roman Reigns comes out to interrupt. Reigns comes down to the ring and we see Vince standing behind Elias with a smile on his face. Reigns drops Elias with a Superman Punch. Vince then gets in Reigns’ face and seems to be telling Reigns to leave. Reigns hits a Superman Punch on Vince and Elias catches Vince as he falls. Reigns then says that he doesn’t care what Vince or Elias says, SmackDown LIVE is Reigns’ yard now. Reigns then leaves the ring as Elias tries to help Mr. McMahon. Reigns turns back around on the ramp and hits the ring again and he hits a spear on Elias. Reigns poses then heads up the ramp as SmackDown LIVE goes off the air.
