Rashford praises former Man United youngster

Marcus Rashford has hailed his former Manchester United teammate Angel Gomes, who signed for Lille this summer.

Gomes and Rashford came through the ranks together at Man Utd. Gomes has played for England at every youth level from U16 to U20.

The attacker made his debut for the Red Devils by coming on as a late substitute for Wayne Rooney in the Premier League in May 2017.

But Gomes only went onto make a further four first-team appearances between then and the end of the 2019/20 season.

With senior appearances hard to come by, Man Utd were unable to agree on a contract extension for Gomes. He left the club for free at the end of the 2019/20 campaign.

He signed a five-year deal with the French outfit and shortly afterwards he joined Boavista on a season-long loan. Gomes has three goals and two assists from five games in the Primeira Liga.

Rashford told Portuguese outlet, A Bola, that Gomes could reach the “very top”:

“It is a pleasure to talk about him, I feel that he is doing very well in Boavista.

“We speak regularly on the phone and have congratulated him several times. It’s a good sign. He scored that incredible midfield goal that went viral. A great goal really! But with his talent, nothing surprises me.

“He has incredible skill. Whoever plays alongside him realises that he is an exciting talent.

“Having trained with him since I was very young, it is easy to see his success and to guess his bright future.

“Having him train with us at that time was a great experience and opportunity. I remember that during training he faced us all without fear, always anxious to have the ball.

“Both of us have had similar growth experiences. We lived in the same houses as the club and were on the same development program, aimed at selected players.

“We always got along very well, as we lived together for about three years. I was able to provide guidance on my first experiences with the first-team.

“He has everything to reach the top. I’ll always tell you! He plays as an attacking midfielder, but personally, I see him as someone who thrives on the pitch with the ball, so he can play in other positions with equal success.

“It is easy to play with him. It was something very natural because he is always looking for a quick pass, which surprises defenders and creates opportunities to score.

“I can thank him for a lot of goals. He’s a great team player and one of the things I most hope will happen is to play with him again. It is a wish that I trust will come true!”
