Newcastle United vs Wolves: TV channel, live stream, squad news & preview

The Magpies will look to maintain their recent revival in form against a Wolverhampton side in buoyant mood after an impressive win in midweek

Newcastle take on Wolves at St James’ Park on Sunday looking to secure their fourth win in six Premier League games.

Rafael Benitez’s side made a disastrous start to the season – losing seven of their first nine games – but their recent revival has seen them move out of the relegation zone.

Wolves head to the North East full of confidence after they came from behind to beat Chelsea at Molineux in midweek.

The 2-1 victory ended an alarming run of five defeats in six games that had threatened to derail their season after an impressive start to life back in the top flight.

Midfielders Ki, Diame, Shelvey, Ritchie, Murphy, Atsu, Hayden, Kenedy

Newcastle have midfielder Matt Ritchie available after suspension but Fabian Schar is banned after he picked up his fifth booking of the season against Everton in midweek.

Kenedy is expected to return after recovering from a toe problem that forced him to miss Wednesday’s game at Goodison Park.

Paul Dummett is also back in training after a month out with a hamstring problem but is unlikely to start due to a lack of match fitness.

Newcastle potential starting XI: Dubravka, Yedlin, Clark, Lascelles, Fernandez, Manquillo, Atsu, Ki, Diame, Kenedy, Rondon.

Position Wolves squad

Wolves have Ruben Neves available after a one-match suspension but it remains to be seen whether he will go straight back into the starting XI after Morgan Gibbs-White impressed in his absence against Chelsea on Wednesday.

Jonny Otto is still out with a knee injury so Ruben Vinagre is expected to keep his place.

St James’ Park has not been a happy place for Newcastle this season – both on and off the pitch.

The Magpies have lost six of their eight Premier League home league games this campaign, equalling a club record set during the 1953-54 season.

Those results have been set against a background of rancour and resentment in the stands, with the supporters continuing their protests against owner Mike Ashley.

However, there are signs that things are improving on both counts. A run of three successive victories – two of those at home – have lifted the Magpies away from immediate danger at the foot of the table.

Meanwhile, a planned supporter boycott of Sunday’s game has been postponed amid reports that the club could soon be sold to a consortium fronted by former Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon.

News of the postponed protest was gratefully received by Benitez, who retains the full support of the fans despite their struggles at times this campaign.

“I have to say thank you to the fans because my message has been very clear all this time,” he said. “This group of players deserve support because they work so hard until the last minute of every game so I think it’s fair to them.”

A quick glance at the fixture list further highlights the importance of Sunday’s game. Matches against fellow strugglers Fulham and Huddersfield follow before facing five of the current top six in their next eight games over Christmas and the new year.

Wolves meanwhile are seemingly on the up again after yet another impressive result against one of the Premier League leading lights in midweek.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side had already earned credible draws against Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal before coming from behind to beat Chelsea at Molineux.

That ended a concerning run of five defeats in six games, with four of those coming against sides in the bottom half of the table.

Another win on Sunday would lift the Black Country side into the top ten and within four points of the top six. That would be a remarkable feat for most promoted sides, but such is the scale of the owners’ ambition you get the impression it is only the beginning of what they hope to achieve.
