MANKATO, Minn. — After being absent from the national championship last season, MSU will send three wrestlers to nationals.
Minnesota State (5-3, 5-3 NSIC) finished 7th in team scores with 72.0 points as Maryville finished in 1st place.
In his first match, #4 Cody Quinn (Sr., 165 lbs.) was tied up with #3 Nicolas Haferkamp (McKendree) in the third period but won with the riding time he collected from a long takedown in the first period. Quinn moved into the 1st place game looking to avenge a loss earlier in the season to #2 Gabe Forgarty (SCSU). Quinn won with a 7-1 decision to earn his second regional title in his career.
#6 Da’Wayne Robertson moved on to the 1st place match to face familiar foe, #1 TJ North. Just like last time, the match headed into overtime. After both wrestlers failed to takedown each other, North circled around Robertson to win 1st place.
#8 Alphonso Vruno (Jr., 141 lbs.) started day two with two loses to the #2 and #3 wrestlers in the nation. In the 5th place match, Vruno beat Josh Howk (SCSU) and forced a true 4th place match against James Krischke (Maryville). With the winner moving on to nationals, Vruno won by a score of 4-3.
#5 Adam Cooling (So., 157 lbs.) took two loses in his first two matches on Sunday. Moving into the 5th place match, Cooling met up with Dakota Head (Ouachita Baptist) and won, 5-3, to finish his season off.
Malcolm Allen (Jr., 285 lbs.) took a loss from #3 Austin Goergen (SCSU) by a fall. He gave up a takedown in the third period in his next match and lost 3-2 to 4th place finisher, Mike Lowman, (Augie). He won the 5th place match over Mitchell Eull (Minot State), 5-3.
Corey Abernathy (Fr., 184 lbs.) lost his only match of the day by a 9-2 decision to end his freshman campaign. Scott VanDeLoo (Jr., 197 lbs.) also suffered a similar fate with an exit of the regional tournament by a fall at the 3:50 mark.
The three Mavericks will travel to the NCAA Division II National Championships in St. Louis Missouri on March 13.
