Leicester ‘failure’ unlocks door to £60m man for Man Utd, Chelsea

Leicester City may have to accept defeat in their battle to keep Chelsea and Man Utd target Ben Chilwell this summer after they missed out on a top-four finish, according to reports.

Following a fine start to the season, and a 4-0 win over Aston Villa in the final game before lockdown, Leicester appeared firmly on course for a top-four finish.

But Brendan Rodgers would see his side win just two fixtures on their return, taking just nine points from their nine games and slipping out of the Champions League places following that last-day defeat to Man Utd.

MAILBOX: Who cares about Man United or Chelsea points totals?

Reports have consistently linked Chelsea with a move for Chilwell but the rumours that the Foxes would want £75m for the left-back were apparently putting the London club off.

And now The Sun claims that Leicester’s ‘failure to secure Champions League football is set to cost them the chance to persuade’ Chilwell that his future remains with Rodgers’ side.

A previous report from The Sun claimed that it will cost £60m to prise the defender away from the King Power Stadium with Man Utd and Chelsea ‘interested in the England star.’

Champions League football would have been ‘a carrot to convince him to stay’ but now those hopes have disappeared Leicester look set to lose him.

Chilwell sees Champions League football as essential to becoming England’s ‘first-choice left-back with the Euros looming’, while there will be ‘more money on offer’ if he pushes for a move.
