James insists that he is ‘nowhere near his potential’

Manchester United winger Daniel James has admitted he is ‘nowhere near his potential’ after a difficult season impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

James only featured 26 times across all competitions for United this season, opposed to his 46 appearances made in the 2019-20 campaign.

Speaking to the club’s official website, the Wales international says that he will try his best to have a greater impact at Old Trafford next season.

“I’m developing every single game. I’m learning. I reflect on every game and every season I’ve played, whether I’ve played zero minutes, whether I play all the games, I think I’m always learning.

“For me, I’m nowhere near my potential and I just want to keep improving.”

When asked what his toughest challenge of the season was, James said: “Working my way back into the team around Christmas. I didn’t play as many games as I’d have liked, so I was just working my way back into the team.”

Despite a difficult season, the 23-year-old scored five goals across all competitions, his joint-best scoring season.

“It’s been different. It’s been hectic. We know the fans are behind us from home, but it’s just not the same.

“You just want to hear that roar when you’re running with the ball. It’ll be something that will be great to have back. I think they’re missing it just as much as we are. I hope soon we’ll get it back when everything’s safe.”

James has the European Championships to look forward to after being named in caretaker manager Robert Page’s Wales squad.

The winger is an important player for his country, scoring in a 1-0 World Cup qualifier win over Czech Republic in March, and will need to be on top form if the Dragons are to make it out of their Euros group.

Gareth Bale and co will play Albania in a friendly later today, which is their last match before facing Switzerland next Saturday in Group A of Euro 2020.

They are also joined in Group A by Italy and Turkey, who will play in the tournament’s opening match on Friday night.
