Greek Women’s League: Olympiacos is the Champion

Olympiacos took the first Championship title in its history by winning AEK by 3-1 at the third of the finals.

It was the 3rd consecutive win for Olympiacos. The last game of the finals took place in a hall filled with flaming fans and the bad luck that followed the women’s team of Olympiacos the last years was finally over.

Olympiacos was much better team, with tight defense, a lot of solution in attack and an excellent middle blocker, its captain Dimitra Yakoumi. Olympiacos served with excellency and the back zone of AEK literally suffered. AEK had a lot of problems especially in defense and reception and the absence of Athanasia Totsidou was more than noticed (she was injured at the first game of the finals). AEK tried to overcome its problems and win the second set. The third set was the key-set of the game. Olympiacos took an early lead but AEK managed to over-turn the set and took the lead, and took the first set point, unfortunately for AEK, Radosveta Teneva blocked Fenia Papageorgiou and tied the set 24-24 and Yakoumi took the last point for Olympiacos 24-26. At the fourth set AEK didn’t seem to have the passion needed. Olympiacos took the lead again 11-17 and AEK took a deep breath trying to make a difference and came closer by 2 points at 20-22, Yakoumi scored one more point, the setter of AEK, Athina Papafotiou made a mistake and the setter of Olympiacos Stella Christodoulou with an ace game the Championshio to Olympiacos.
