Dragons Advance to Semis at Virginia Duals With 48-0 Win over Apprentice School

HAMPTON, Va. — Four wins by fall helped the Minnesota State University Moorhead wrestling team earn a dominant 48-0 win over the Apprentice School in the quarterfinals of the American College division at the Virginia Duals Friday in Hampton, Va.

With the victory, MSUM (3-1 duals) will face Ferrum College on Saturday at 1 p.m. Central time in the semifinals. Ferrum defeated Anderson, 38-12 on Friday.

Junior Blake Bosch (133), junior Garret Hoffner (157), freshman Brayden Kuntz (174) and junior Nader Abdullatif (285) all recorded pins for the Dragons. MSUM won by forfeit at 125 and also earned bonus points at 141 and 184.

The Dragons led 6-0 after Apprentice forfeit at 125. Bosch improved to 17-5 on the year with a pin of Aaron Bright in 4:45 at 133 to push the lead to 12-0.

Redshirt freshman Kristian Vazquez had a solid performance with a 12-4 win over Jacob Michael at 141 to push the MSUM advantage to 16-0. Junior Isaac Novacek won at 149 for MSUM, taking a 5-2 decision to push the lead to 22-0.

Hoffner improved to 13-4 on the season with a pin of Landon Leithauser at 157 pounds. Hoffner recorded the fall in 2:08 to make it 25-0.

Freshman Adam Blees won 6-3 at 165 for MSUM, and Kuntz followed with a fall in 5:50 at 174 as the Dragons built an insurmountable 34-0 lead.

Freshman Austin May controlled his match at 184 for the Dragons, beating Chris Kennedy by a technical fall (18-2) to push the lead to 39-0. Freshman Cody Anderson beat Apprentice’s Josh Rodriguez 11-6 at 197, and Abdullatif finished off the shutout with a pin of Gino Saunders in 3:24 at 285.

The Dragons’ matchup with Ferrum will begin at 1 p.m. Central time in Hampton. Kutztown and Liberty will meet in the other semifinal.
