Christensen not happy with Chelsea bench duty as he mulls over possible move

The Denmark international defender has struggled for game time this season and sparked transfer talk ahead of the January window

Andreas Christensen admits he is not happy with a lack of minutes at Chelsea, with an unfortunate situation forcing him to consider a move elsewhere.

The 22-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough campaign at Stamford Bridge in 2017-18 as he figured 40 times under Antonio Conte.

A change in the dugout has dropped him down the pecking order, though, with Maurizio Sarri favouring David Luiz and Antonio Rudiger as his centre-half options.

Christensen has been restricted to six outings as a result, and is still waiting on his first Premier League action of the current campaign.

That standing has sparked talk of a possible transfer during the January window, with the Denmark international conceding he has some serious thinking to do.

He told Sky Sports: “It’s different from last season – I played a lot of games and this season it hasn’t been like that.

“It’s always difficult for a player but we’ll see what happens.”

Quizzed on whether he will push for a switch over the winter, Christensen added: “It’s a difficult question. I think if you asked every player that’s not playing if they are happy, they are going to say ‘no’.

“Everyone wants to play. I can’t do anything else but go back there, train and do my best.

“Every time I get an opportunity, I have to do well and perform well and show him [Sarri] that he can count on me.

“You don’t want to sit around and wait for it, you want to play. Not playing isn’t fun and it’s a different situation from last season.”

While frustrated at present, Christensen did commit to a new four-and-a-half-year contract with Chelsea in January.

With that agreement set to take him through to 2022, he has suggested he is willing to be patient in his pursuit of first-team football.

Pressed again on whether he will leave west London in early 2019, Christensen said: “I don’t think so.”
