Chelsea, Spurs make ‘first breakthrough’ over Rudiger deal

Chelsea and Tottenham are making progress in negotiations over Germany defender Antonio Rudiger, according to reports.

The centre-back has fallen down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge this season following the arrival of Thiago Silva from Paris Saint-Germain.

The Germany international hasn’t featured in any of Chelsea’s opening three Premier League fixtures of the season.

Despite Frank Lampard’s struggle to find a solid defensive pairing, the 27-year-old is reportedly deemed surplus to requirements and is said to be keen on a move away from Stamford Bridge for more game time ahead of the European Championships next summer.

A report earlier this week claimed Spurs are interested in Rudiger, while another said he had been offered, along with Ruben Loftus-Cheek, in a Chelsea deal to sign Declan Rice.

And now Sky in Germany (via Sport Witness) claims that a ‘first breakthrough’ has been made between Chelsea and Tottenham after ‘intensive talks’ over a deal for Rudiger.

It has been ‘generally agreed’ that he can leave Chelsea on loan as long as he commits his future to the Blues first, with his deal running out in the summer of 2022.

The report adds that Jose Mourinho ‘would like to borrow’ Rudiger while ‘some Italian clubs’ are also understood to be interested.

Chelsea are also thought to be holding ‘specific talks’ with Paris Saint-Germain over a potential deal with the French champions also in the mix for his signature.
