Bayern chief: We may ‘have to deal with’ Liverpool interest

Bayern Munich chief-executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge admits the club might “have to deal with” Liverpool interest in Thiago Alcantara.

Midfielder Thiago was first linked with Liverpool late last month, with the Reds said to be ‘very close’ to securing a deal.

Liverpool were initially believed to have shelved their transfer plans this summer as a result of the financial impact of the global pandemic, while Jurgen Klopp has stated that the club “cannot spend millions and millions”.

But the Thiago speculation persists and Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano claims that the 29-year-old ‘would love to join Liverpool’ this summer.

Negotiations between the Premier League club, Thiago and Bayern are yet to commence but Rummenigge has confirmed the player “wants to leave”.

“He’s a great guy on and off the pitch. We negotiated with him and met all of his wishes,” he told Bild.

“But Thiago Alcantara wants to leave. It looks like he may want to do something new at the end of his career.

“We don’t want to lose a player for free next year. I say that very clearly.

“We definitely didn’t have any contact with Liverpool at all. If he wants to do that, we have to deal with it.”

Klopp has made his public admiration for Thiago known as far back as summer 2018, during praise for new signing Naby Keita.

“He was two years ago, together with maybe Thiago Alcantara of Bayern, for sure the best player in the Bundesliga by far,” said the German.

He also described the midfielder as “a world-class footballer” in “that deep-lying playmaker role” after last year’s Champions League draw between the two sides at Anfield.

Liverpool could have a gap to fill in that area of the squad due to the expected departure of Adam Lallana and uncertain future of Georginio Wijnaldum.
