Arsenal are ready to pounce on Real Madrid midfielder

Arsenal have made it clear they are not ready to give up the fight to sign Martin Ødegaard on a permanent basis following a report.

The Gunners loaned the Norweigian from La Liga side Real Madrid for the back end of the 2020/21 season with great success.

Mikel Arteta has made no secret of his admiration of Ødegaard with the club desperate to recruit in this ‘number 10’ role due to their lack of depth there.

The irrefutable proof that Pogba, Lacazette are staying

According to a recent report by The Athletic, which claims that the north London side remain hopeful that there may still be an opportunity of signing the 22-year-old on a permanent deal.

This will not come to any kind of fruition until the back end of the transfer window with the Reds looking to see how Carlo Ancelotti deploys the midfielder at the start of the Real Madrid season. Should his minutes be reduced, the player could pursue a transfer away which would leave Arsenal in pole position.

The impact Ødegaard made on Arsenal in the short amount of time he was at the Emirates should not be underestimated.

Mikel Arteta’s side sat a worrying 10th when Ødegaard made the switch to the Premier League, before finishing eighth, which on the face of it may not seem like a wild improvement, but chance creation, goals, and everything you expect to improve went up after Ødegaard’s arrival.

Emile Smith Rowe, who is the only current player in the squad that can hold a candle to Ødegaard, is set to receive a bumper new contract along with a new number 10, taking over from some iconic names like Dennis Bergkamp, Mesut Özil and, William Gallas (not so iconic).

The 20-year-old lacks experience and has a poor injury record, while it would be a risk to put the weight of the season on his shoulders.

Arsenal have alternatives to Ødegaard such as Lyon’s Houssem Aouar but the former remains the priority and has since the very beginning.

Time will tell if Arsenal get the players they need to make a rapid improvement on last season’s disastrous campaign.
