Anelka picks out former Arsenal man as his ‘toughest’ opponent

Nicolas Anelka has picked out former Arsenal defender Martin Keown as his “toughest” opponent, labelling the Englishman as “fast, strong and dirty”.

The Frenchman’s career spanned 19 years, he played for 12 different clubs and made 665 appearances in all competitions at club level.

The former Real Madrid man played for and against Arsenal on numerous occasions and he found their defence particularly tricky to navigate.

“I think Martin Keown was the toughest,” Anelka told Bolton Wanderer’s website. “He was fast, strong and dirty. I liked playing against him in training because I knew it was just like a game situation.

“He helped me a lot to adapt to English football, along with Tony Adams and Steve Bould. Of course it was war every time I played against him when I was facing Arsenal.”

When asked who was the best player he ever played with, Anelka added: Only one player I can say as an answer to this question. Ronaldo – El Phenomeno.”
