The #4 ranked St. Cloud State University wrestling team (7-0, 1-0 NSIC) will open defense of its NWCA Division II National Duals title on Jan. 12 with a 9 a.m. match against UNC-Pembroke at the Prairie Capital Convention Center in Springfield, Ill.
This double-elimination duals tournament will continue through Jan. 13 and it will feature many of the nation’s top ranked Division II teams including #1 Nebraska Kearney, #2 Newberry, #3 Central Oklahoma, #5 Upper Iowa and #6 Grand Canyon.LISTEN LIVE on the KVSC SPORTS STREAM!

POLL POSITION: The Huskies are ranked #4 in the latest Division II Coaches’ Poll this week. Individually, SCSU’s Jacob Kahnke is ranked #2 at 285-pounds and Andy Pokorny is ranked #2 at 133-pounds. Shamus O’Grady is also ranked #2 at 184-pounds this week for the Huskies.
NSIC WRESTLER OF THE WEEK: RS Freshman Clint Poster earned NSIC Wrestler of the Week honors on Jan. 8 for his work at the Grand Canyon Duals on Jan. 5. Poster was 4-0 with three falls at the tournament at 157-pounds in Phoenix. Poster is 18-1 this season with a team leading nine falls to his credit. Poster has won 10 consecutive matches heading into this weekend’s action.
FAMOUS SHAMUS: RS Senior Shamus O’Grady is tied with Poster for the team victory lead this season at 18-1. O’Grady is a three-time All-American for the Huskies and he is a resident of Coon Rapids. O’Grady has won 11 consecutive matches heading into this weekend’s action. O’Grady is 86-28 during his career at SCSU.
BACK ON THE MATS: After taking redshirting during the fall semester, SCSU seniors Andy Pokorny (133), Jacob D. Horn (149) and Kurt Salmen (174) all saw “official” action at the Grand Canyon Duals on Jan. 5. Pokorny and Horn have both gained All-America status during their careers at SCSU. Pokorny was 3-0 at the Duals, while Salmen went 3-1 and Horn was 2-0.
AMAZING: The Huskies will bring a 33 dual match win streak into the 2013 NWCA Duals on Jan. 12-13. The last time the Huskies lost a match was on Jan. 27, 2011 against Augustana by a 19-18 score and the last time the Huskies lost a match at the NWCA Duals was an 18-15 setback against Augustana on Jan. 9, 2011. This is the longest team dual match win streak in the history of Husky wrestling!
CENTURY CLUB: Jacon Kahnke is a perfect 6-0 at 285-pounds this season for the Huskies. In four seasons at SCSU, Kahnke has only lost 12 matches and currently owns an impressive 101-12 career record with the Huskies. His 100th win was a 3-1 win over California Baptist’s Zach Merrill on Jan. 5 in Phoenix. The team record for most career wins was set by Tad Merritt with 144 from 2008-12.
RANDOM THOUGHTS: The Huskies are 331-181 in individual bouts this season…the Huskies have charted 77 falls this winter…SCSU head coach Steve Costanzo is in his 7th season at SCSU with an 87-23 overall record in St. Cloud. In 14 seasons as a college coach, Costanzo owns a 147-53-2 career record…the Huskies have only lost two dual matches during the past three seasons.
